Packaging for candles and cosmetics: a jar candle in a kraft two-piece box with a card insert

The best packaging for candles and cosmetics fits the product snugly and stops it moving. For candles, that means a close-fitting box with a card insert: tuck-end cartons for everyday ranges, and two-piece or rigid boxes for gifts. For cosmetics, use a folding carton sized to the bottle or tube, add an insert for glass, and move to a rigid or magnetic box for premium sets.

Packaging for candles and cosmetics: a jar candle in a kraft two-piece box with a card insert

Candles and cosmetics have a lot in common. Both often come in glass, both are bought as gifts, and both are judged on looks. So the box has three jobs: protect the product, sell the brand and carry the label details buyers need. If you're starting from scratch, our custom boxes can be made to fit any jar, bottle or tube.

Hold the jar still with an insert

Glass jars crack when they slide around. A card insert that grips the jar is the cheapest way to cut breakage, and it also stops lids popping off. For multi-candle sets, use a divided insert so the jars never touch. Our candle box with insert is built for this.

Ship candles safely

For online orders, wrap each candle on its own, then pack it in a double-wall corrugated box. Leave about 5 cm of cushioning around each candle, and fill the gaps so nothing moves. Paper void fill or corrugated wrap works well if you want to avoid plastic.

Plan for heat and scent

Candles soften in warm vans. So leave enough headroom above the wick, otherwise the lid can press into the wax. Fragrance oils can also mark plain board, which is why a coated inner surface helps for strongly scented candles. Use heat-resistant labels on the jar too.

Leave room for safety labels

In Great Britain, candles need product safety warnings, and scented candles usually need CLP hazard labelling as well. Keep a clear panel on the base or back for this. Business Companion, the trading standards guidance site, explains the rules in detail.

Make space for the label

Cosmetics sold in Great Britain must show set details in English. These include the Responsible Person's name and UK address, the function, the net quantity, the batch number, any precautions, the shelf life and the ingredients. When the bottle is too small, much of this can go on the outer box instead. So plan the panel layout before you sign off the artwork. The GOV.UK guidance sets out what a Responsible Person must do.

Finishes for candle and cosmetics packaging

Soft-touch lamination and foil suit premium skincare. Bright gloss and spot UV suit colour cosmetics. Kraft with one-colour print, on the other hand, suits natural and vegan brands. Above all, keep the finish consistent across the range, so products sit well together on a shelf.

Eco-friendly packaging for candles and cosmetics

  • Choose FSC or PEFC certified board, or recycled kraft.
  • Use card inserts instead of foam or plastic, so the whole pack recycles.
  • Avoid mixed plastic-and-card builds, because they are hard to recycle.
  • Use a single foil logo instead of laminating the whole box.
  • Add clear recycling advice, such as an OPRL-style label.
  • Right-size every box, since smaller boxes use less board and cost less to post.

Five mistakes with packaging for candles and cosmetics

  • Ordering a box that is too big, so the product moves and breaks.
  • Skipping the insert for glass jars and bottles.
  • Forgetting space for safety, ingredient and batch details.
  • Choosing a finish that scuffs easily for products sold online.
  • Approving artwork before seeing a 3D mock-up or sample.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best packaging for candles and cosmetics sent by post?

A box sized closely to the product, with a card insert, inside a double-wall corrugated mailer with cushioning around it.

Should candle boxes have a window?

A window helps in shops where people choose by colour. For gifts and online orders, however, a closed box protects better and gives a nicer reveal.

What packaging for candles and cosmetics do luxury brands use?

Many use rigid or magnetic boxes for sets and hero products, with soft-touch lamination, foil and a shaped insert.

Is kraft good packaging for candles and cosmetics?

Yes. Kraft suits natural, vegan and eco brands, and you can print it in one or more colours.

Do perfume boxes need an insert?

Yes, for glass bottles. A shaped insert holds the bottle still and cuts breakage in transit.
